Unfortunately myself and Ben have encountered a problem whilst trying to upload our project on to vimeo. As we ran out of time to upload the film during Friday's lesson I tried to email the attached video to both of us via the school emailing system. For some reason the school email has decided to block the attached file meaning that we cannot upload the video until we get back to school.
I apologize for the delay this is causing and will ensure to upload the file on the first Monday back.
Did you upload it onto the media server? If so, I could try to upload it.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I can't get access to the right part of the server, so it will just have to wait until next week.
ReplyDeleteForget the previous comment - it's on my blog now. Notes below:
ReplyDeletePrisoner - Laura/ Ben
00:00 - opening is a bit blunt, although I like the use of the music. Well framed long-shot here and effective positioning of titles. A shame the camera is a little jiggly; try to keep the shot as still as possible (this is to do with the extreme length if the zoom).
00:11 - not so keen on the zoom here - hard to make a zoom work
00:19 - I would have had Josh walk straight at the camera, then cut; it breaks the illusion slightly since he seems to acknowledge it's there. For this bit, I would have started with the LS, then cut to the ELS when he started to move; both the shots themselves are well-framed, it's just the zoom which is less effective)
00:20 - although the pan is quite good in itself, I'm not sure why it's there. You would expect that the camera would pick up Josh within the movement rather than cutting to him.
00:22 - the editing is slightly off here (by a few frames) since you just seem to catch Josh beginning the move. However, the framing is very good again and you manage to track Josh effectively
00:35 - similarly, the shot following Josh to the building is well done (and the location itself is good). The continuity error with the glasses is, as you mention, somewhat noticable, so this is something to consider in the future
00:40 - I like the CU on the hand. Not so keen on the cross-dissolve to the shot of the green door (particularly considering the fade to black at the end of the shot) - either a fade through black at the start or some other footage to show how he got there would help. Also, you kind of break the 180 degree rule (Josh exits the previous shot from L to R, then enters the next shot from R crossing to L) although technically it is acceptable since they are not strictly consecutive moments (he has clearly gone through some other part of the building); it's just a little disconcerting
00:50 - you hold the black for a little too long here
00:56 - I like the framing of the shot, but as you can probably tell, the lighting is less effective - you need to think about this in the future. There is a lot of ambient noise/ hiss
01:08 - although I understand why you've shot this scene in one long take, for the sake of the assessment, you need to try to use other shots. In this case, you could have used shot/ reverse to break up the sequence - it would be very unusual to see an AS piece which depends solely on a single long take like this (although it is fairly well acted)
01:27 - again, I like the framing here; could have done with a little more variety in the editing
01:37 - something to note is the slight glitch in the audio between shots. this is to do with the ambient sound. There are ways to deal with this; at the end of the edit, you should aim to do a final pass to clean up the audio. The shot is quite well framed, although I would have moved the camera back a little (if possible) since the two characters are slightly too low in the frame (you would usually expect their eye-lines to be slightly higher in the shot)
01:46 - you've missed a lot of opportunities to use CU/ edits to emphasise key lines (for example, "You are number 6") and the reaction
02:01 - slightly odd to fade out on the big dramatic ending
Overall, this isn't bad - there are a number of effective shots and the location/ mise-en-scene is generally effective. There is some very well staged camera-movement and the continuity is generally solid. The key things to consider are making sure that you are more adventurous with the number of shots you use during key sequences and that you consider things such as the lighting and sound in order to make sure that your work looks and sounds good.
